First timer’s guide: The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra

Editor’s Note: CityMom and musician Kim is an avid attendee of the ISO and shares all of her pro-tips here…let’s dive in!

Looking for somewhere new to go out with your honey or a unique spot for your latest mama’s night out? Take it from me; the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) has something for everyone! Before you go, I’ve compiled a list of things to know about this world-class venue!

Things to know before you go:

If you’re like me, you’re wondering what to wear, where to go, and how to park. When I think of going to the ISO, it’s for a fun night out with my girlfriends or a romantic date with my hubby. I tend to dress up a little for a night out without my kids. Think business casual or cocktail attire if you’re feeling yourself! You’re heading downtown to the heart of our city, so feel free to get a little fancy.

The ISO is housed in the beautiful and historic Hilbert Circle Theater. The Express Parking Garage is open on the west side of Pennsylvania Street between Market and Washington Streets. Cash or card are accepted, and there is a self-pay station at the bottom of the elevator. This is a handicap-accessible garage with a ramp that leads right to the side door entrance.

Additionally, you can go on the ISO website for directions or to find additional parking through Spot Hero. Valet parking is available for specific performances, so check the website before you go for a convenient and speedy option. Public transportation to the circle is also an option, so check the bus route and schedule nearest you!

The ISO is handicap accessible with ramps, wheelchair-accessible seating, Braille and large print programs, listening enhancement devices, American Sign Language interpretation, and service animals are allowed to assist guests. Check the website for more details, as some of these options must be arranged two weeks before a performance. The ISO wants Hilbert Circle Theater to be a place for everyone to enjoy the beauty of orchestral music.

Timeliness and amenities:

This is an event where you’ll want to be early so you can take your time! Give yourself plenty of time to park and grab your tickets from will-call if you choose not to print tickets at home or use your mobile device. Will-call is located on the first floor upon entry.

Don’t be shy! Everyone is so friendly, if you can’t find your way, staff members are plentiful and happy to help.

Since you’ll have a little extra time (see what I did there—positive thinking that you will be early), head to the Encore Lounge for cocktails, champagne, beer, wine, or coffee drinks. There is plentiful seating for great conversation. Restrooms can be found on the first and second floors that are clearly marked for your convenience!

Concert etiquette:

It’s best to take your seat about five minutes ahead of showtime to experience the space and orient yourself to the beautiful atmosphere. Head to any theater door, and a staff member will walk you to your seat!

Did you know? You can bring your beverages into the theater to enjoy during showtime.

Once the music starts, you might wonder when to clap. Sometimes this is obvious, but sometimes not. My advice is to take your lead from the conductor. The conductor will lower their arms and turn around when it’s time to clap, and if you feel led, standing ovations are always welcome!

Need a break? Typically, orchestra performances have an intermission. They vary in time but note that the house lights will flash when it’s time to head back in.

Here are some bonus insider tips from your friendly musician and CityMom:

  • The ISO has so many different types of musical experiences, from popular to classical, so go with a style that fits you and listen before you book!

  • All seats are great at the ISO, but if you want to get an eagle-eye view for your first time, check out the box seats or the balcony.

  • Here’s my best-kept secret… If you find yourself with a few extra minutes before the performance or at intermission, go check out the Wood Room on the second floor for some of the best views of Monument Circle. I’m always in awe of our Circle City, and this view and an excellent night of music does it for me every time!
