Best children’s books of 2024 (so far)

We do all we can to keep the bedtime routine “routine” even– and especially– as the season shifts, days get longer, and the sun stays up later. But, that doesn’t mean Spring is not a great time to shake up the bedtime reading material a bit. Check out our favorite new children's and early reader book picks!

Here are the best children’s books of 2024, so far:

 

Emo ABCs by Julie Chencinski

The ABCs are not just a phase! Kids and angsty teens all grown up will delight in this fun, colorful ABC book with Emo songs on each page starting with “A is for All The Small Things.”

My Thoughts Have Wings by Maggie Smith

“Good Bones” poet Maggie Smith is taking her talents to picture books this spring with the release of her first children's book, “My Thoughts Have Wings.” Beautifully illustrated, Smith shares thoughtful, lyrical prose on how to calm busy minds at bedtime. 

Lola and The Troll by Connie Schultz

Lola loves her imaginary dog, playing outside, and her curly hair; but, when a bully dressed as a Troll starts saying mean things to her and the people around her she starts doing things differently. With help from a friend, she remembers that she loves those things about herself and can be brave. Young readers will learn that sometimes bullies need a little kindness.

I am Trying to Love Germs by Bethany Barton

Written in a smart, funny graphic novel style, Bethany Barton encourages budding scientists to explore the world of bacteria, microbes, and pandemics, and to wash their hands!

Sankofa by Eric Adjepong

In Sankofa, young readers will find how food is linked to much of our culture, traditions, and stories. In the story, a young, first-generation American is asked to bring a dish to school that represents his family’s culture and learn more about the idea of “home” along the way.

Piper Chin Sings by Phillipa Soo (April 2, 2024)

Hamilton’s original Eliza, Phillipa Soo, debuts as a children’s book author and shares a story of  turning stage fright into confidence

Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things That Go: 50th Anniversary Edition

This classic that introduced countless children to the vehicles of Busytown for the last 50 years gets a refresh. This book is true to the original but also includes pull-out posters and never-before-seen sketches, making it a great gift for future fans.



Bigger kids and early readers also have a lot to look forward to this Spring as well!

  • Super popular series “Dog Man” by Dave Pilkey released Dog Man: The Secret Shedder on March 19.

  • Also new to the shelves this Spring is The Misfits: The Royal Conundrum by Lisa Yee which is being marketed as a highly illustrated answer to kids who have outgrown “The Bad Guys.”

  • Rebel Girls: Money Matters by Alexa von Tobel also comes out in late March and helps to lay the foundation of money management and even guides young women into entrepreneurship.

  • Chanel Miller makes her middle-grade book debut on April 23, 2024, with Magnolia Wu Unfolds It All telling the story of a young woman determined to return every lost sock at her parent's laundromat to its rightful owner.

  • The graphic novel, Blood City Rollers by V.P. Anderson follows a should-have-been ice skater who gets sucked into a paranormal roller derby. There she has to try new things, navigate the supernatural, and learn what it means to be a team.
