Top 10 mother-daughter date ideas (from a pre-teen’s POV)

Editor’s Note: When CityKid Emerson wrote to us about providing a list of her favorite mom-and-me “dates” we were thrilled. It can be difficult to carve out quality time with older kids and even harder to find something you both enjoy! Peruse this list with your not-so-mini-anymore-mini and snag a few ideas for your next “date.”

I don't know about you but I love to go on dates with my mom. She is one of the best people to be around and enjoys going on fun adventures with me. I want to inspire more moms to go on “dates” with their daughters!

Here are 10 of our favorite mother-daughter date ideas:

1. Book a class

I have absolutely loved making candles with my mom and grandma (in Indianapolis, Penn and Beech is our go-to spot). Learning to make or do something new is the perfect activity on a cold rainy day.

2. Visit the library

Unlike my mom, I am not much of a bookworm, but going to the library and finding a good graphic novel is always nice - and mom always has a new book to read when we come home.

3. Bake together

We have had our highs and lows with baking but some of my favorites were meringues and carrot cake muffins. Even if it doesn’t turn out perfectly, the process is fun!

4. Check out something new

My mom and I love to find small, local coffee shops to try. Our favorite right now in Indianapolis is Ascend Coffee. (I personally love their pastries like the goat cheese savory one.)

5. Plan a cozy movie night

If it's a new comedy or a murder mystery from the ‘80s I love watching movies on the couch in pajamas with my mom. Also I can watch Christmas movies at any time. We love watching (and maybe making fun of) Hallmark holiday movies over a cup of hot chocolate. Every year we make a Hallmark bingo board too!

6. Do a puzzle

Quality time doesn’t always mean we always have to go out. During quarantine, we did so many puzzles when we were bored, from license plates to plants, there is a puzzle for everything!

7. Book a pedi

I love discovering new colors to paint my toes and relaxing with my mom. She is the best spa partner! Make a day of it and try out a good mask when you get home. Whether it is a sheet mask or peel it will always make your skin feel nice and clean. And you get to have some quality time while you wait for them to set!

8. Go thrift shopping

We have really liked thrifting lately (our favorite thrift store in Indianapolis is the Toggery). I love looking at the accessories while my mom checks out clothes. There are always interesting treasures to find!

9. Rearrange a rooms

Sometimes the rooms in our house get a little boring. We like to brighten them up  by rearranging the furniture. You can go “shopping” in the other rooms of your house for new accessories to add.

10. Brunch together

Going for brunch is much fun with your friends but, trust me, it’s even better with your mini me! My mom and I love to talk and catch-up before a new week at one of our favorite brunch spots.

I hope you take in some of these ideas and consider going on a date with your daughter. Who knows, maybe you will find a new favorite activity or start a tradition to enjoy for years to come!
