CityKid reading Ellie Engle Saves Herself

LGBTQ+ reads for kids of all ages:

Ellie Engle Saves Herself by Leah Johnson (ages 8-12)

Indianapolis-based and LGBTQ+ author Leah Johnson perfectly captures that tween angst - when you want to be cool but you just feel boring. (Except Ellie wakes up one day with magical powers!)

Gorgeously Me! by Jonathan Van Ness and Kamala Nair (ages 4-8)

This diverse and inclusive book reminds children to be true to themselves and celebrates you and everything that makes you unique. Each child’s abilities pictured makes their community stronger!

Just Shy of Ordinary by A.J. Sass (ages 9-13)

Written by a neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ author and starring Shai, a Jewish, nonbinary, neurodivergent middle schooler, this middle-grade novel explores what to do when your world is turned upside down. Shai has a plan to reduce their anxiety, but what happens when a new school throws a twist in that path?

Everything Possible by Fred Small and Alison Brown (ages 2-5)

In honor of the 40th anniversary of this inclusive and iconic folk song, Everything Possible pairs beautiful illustrations with verses that encourage children to live the life they want, loving whoever they will. (Bonus: scan the QR code at the end to hear the song!)

Robin’s Worlds by Rainie Oet and Mathias Ball (ages 4-8)

This coming-in-winter-2024 picture book features Robin, who is nonbinary and turning eight. Everyone has forgotten their birthday, except the Cat-Headed Wanderer who sweeps Robin away to a magical treehouse celebration. However, there’s another reason Robin was brought to this party - what lies beyond the half-open door in the back?

The Pale Queen by Ethan M Aldridge (ages 8-12)

If your family is into all things fantasy, check out this graphic novel featuring Agatha, an aspiring astronomer, and the secret magical world she discovers in the mist next to her village. What is the Lady in the Hills up to, and can Agatha protect her friends and family?

Rainbow Allies: The True Story of Kids Who Stood Against Hate by Nancy Churnin and Izzy Evans (ages 4-7)

We love a good nonfiction picture book, and this brand-new one is a great way to start the conversation of how to be an ally in your community. Based on real-life events, neighborhood children rally around lesbian couple Cari and Lauri when their Pride flag is stolen and their porch is egged. The kids are determined to show them (and their dogs!) just how valued they are.

Camp Prodigy by Caroline Palmer (ages 8-12)

This brand new graphic novel follows two nonbinary kids as they navigate orchestra camp - Tate wants to be a professional violinist, but they’re the worst musician in school! Eli is the musician who inspired Tate to play in the first place, but they had a nervous breakdown after their time in the spotlight. If they work together, can they overcome both of their obstacles?
