Planning the perfect outfit for beach family photos

theCityMoms use affiliate links to support our staff and work through commissions, but our opinions are our own. We only share items we use and love.

Whether you live within walking distance of the beach or plan a family trip this summer, we recommend scheduling a beach family photoshoot. The crashing waves, soft sand, and gorgeous sunsets make for a great place to take family photos! And don’t get stuck on the “what to wear,” our staff photog Britny is here with some outfit ideas and pro tips.

Pro tip: Find a local professional photographer - they’ll know the best spots to take photos and the best time to go!

Here are a few of our favorite outfit ideas for beach family portraits:

Going Neutral

A white and tan color palette looks crisp and clean and keeps your family cool at the beach. Khaki shorts, white linen shirts, and white dresses would work well with this neutral-colored timeless look. If you have a larger family and need to break up the palette, consider adding subtle patterns or different textures. We love this flowy dress for little girls to add some texture to this classic look. We also love this subtle pattern for a little boy’s button-down shirt.

Pro tip: Skip over looking for shoes and opt for bare feet for everyone.

As Blue as the Ocean

Play off those cool water tones and add varying shades of blue to your outfits. Expecting? We love this bump-friendly blue dress or for a more relaxed vibe, this cozy t-shirt midi just screams “beach season!” Pair easily with blue jeans and a button-down for dad, and a light blue shirt or jumper for young children. Remember you can always accessorize with neutrals to break up the blues a bit.

Pro tip: Consider taking your Apple watch off a few weeks before your photoshoot so you don’t have a watch tan.

Pop of Color

Sometimes you have to ‘beach like Ken’ and add some pops of color to your family’s outfits. While Ken would choose this striped button-down in pink, we have no doubt he would approve of the mustard yellow as well. A great option to match would be this brightly colored flowy dress. You could also opt for some floral prints with white pants as a great way to balance out bolder colors. Honorable mention: This gorgeous solid-colored jumpsuit!

Pro tip: Avoid dark colors if it’s going to be hot. Everyone will thank you while posing in cool, loose clothing.

As you begin to assemble the outfit choices for your summer family photos, the most important thing to remember is to keep it simple. Pick a color scheme and look in your closets to see what you already have for each family member. Build off of those pieces to create the perfect outfits. Then head to the beach for your family photoshoot and enjoy making memories. After all, there’s no stress allowed at the beach!
