Family Photoshoot Ideas to Celebrate Your Second Baby

Here's the situation: You’re expecting baby number two and want to document the journey (go you!). You might not have quite as many bump pics for the second child because let’s be honest, being pregnant and taking care of another kiddo no matter their age can be rough.

I'm Britny - theCityMoms staff photographer - and I've done hundreds of photo shoots throughout my career. As a professional family maternity photographer, here are the top photos I suggest taking with your family when you’re expecting another little one.

The Announcement Photos

Whether you decide to announce on social media or keep your pregnancy private, my biggest recommendation is to take a moment to document this new baby. A great way to include big sister or big brother is to simply let them hold the ultrasound photo, especially if they’re younger. Keeping their hands occupied helps a lot during photoshoots.

  • Best part? You can easily take these photos at home yourself or hire a professional photographer.

Maternity Photos

With the second pregnancy, most women tend to start showing their baby bump earlier so the best time to have a maternity photoshoot is around 26- 34 weeks. Get the entire family involved and go to a local park just before sunset (aka golden hour). Some of my favorite photos to grab during a maternity shoot are candid moments between mom and the older siblings.

  • Tip: Check to see if a photography permit is required at your local park before going.

SO YOU BOOKED A FAMILY PHOTO SESSION?

Let's talk about what to wear - Family photoshoot outfit ideas: Winter edition

Newborn Photos

If time or budget only allows you to get professional photos for one session, I always suggest the newborn shoot. As moms we tend to be the ones behind the camera, but a newborn shoot at least gets in front of the camera for a few photos of you with your new babe. Newborn photos are typically taken within 7-10 days after your due date. As you already know from your first child, the baby phase goes by fast so this is a beautiful way to make sure little details are captured - their fuzzy hair, tiny toes, and the way their noses scrunch when they’re dreaming - my favorite! Capturing the special time when your first baby becomes the older sibling is also just the sweetest.

  • Special side note: I always suggest having some photos taken of all family members during the session - everyone interacting with the baby, a family session sitting in front of the crib, and solo shots of each family member with the baby.

MY FINAL TIP: If you opt for a professional photographer, check to see if they have a bundle package that includes some of these photoshoots to save some money, and honestly help you remember to take them on time! Remember this time will go by fast so capture those precious moments and enjoy all the baby snuggles.
