Summer skincare :: 5 tips for your best skin

Girl, let's talk skincare because #aging and #summersun and #helpus. With the popularity of FaceApp's 'old' feature hitting like alllll the social channels right now, we're staring down our older selves realizing NOW is the time to get our skincare set for life. With thanks to theCityMoms' sponsors at the Laser Skin and Surgery Center of Indianapolis {or as we know them "LASSI"}, we picked their expert brains for the right summer skincare tips. Read on reader, and feel free to take all the notes you need:

After a prolonged spring, summer has finally hit Central Indiana with a vengeance {including that searing 90+ degree week!}. In response, Hoosiers have been basking in the sun, dipping our toes in the pool, and, let’s be honest... getting a little sweaty.

And all this outdoor fun is wreaking havoc on our skin.

Exposure to the intense summer sun can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, blotchy brown spots, precancerous lesions, and even skin cancer. Now is the time to think about giving your skin a little special attention to get through the rest of the summer healthy, fresh-faced, and glowing!

This past May we hosted Mommahood - an empowering celebration to motherhood! - and were thrilled to have LASSI as one of our event sponsors. So it only seemed right we turn to their experts for these important summer skincare tips:

1. Sunscreen Sunscreen Sunscreen

A quality sunscreen is your #1 defense for summer skin care. When you’re shopping for a facial or body sunscreen, look for a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ with protection from UVA, UVB, and infrared rays. Reapply at least every two hours when you’re out in the sun, and yes, that means your face as well! If you’re wearing makeup and don’t think you can reapply a lotion, consider powders with SPF protection for easy application. Don’t forget to remove your sunscreen at the end of the day. Even though it is no longer effective, it can clog your pores and cause irritation or breakouts, especially if you’ve been sweating. You may need more than soap and water to get those waterproof sunscreens off your skin. Dermatologist, Dr. Tanzi recommends oil-based cleansers and light exfoliation followed by a toner to clear away any residual sunscreen.

2. Swap creams for lotions or serums

Serums and lighter lotions can soak into your skin quickly and feel lighter in the heat. Look for a lighter version of your favorite moisturizer at your favorite beauty supply store. Keeping your moisturizer light and washing your face twice a day will aid in the prevention of clogged pores and blemishes.

3. Fight chlorine damage

Chlorine not only can do a number on your hair, but it is drying and irritating to skin. Rinsing off before you swim can help protect skin; repeating immediately after eliminates some chlorine. Shower with a gentle cleanser as soon as you are able after taking a dip, and add an in-shower exfoliant two to three times a week. Finally, moisturize your skin immediately after showering while skin is still wet to lock in your skin’s natural oils.

4. Dress for the sun

If you’re planning to spend the day in the sun, come prepared. Dermatologist, Dr. Hanke from the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana (LASSI) recommends wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses to protect the most sensitive skin around your eyes. If you burn easily, consider rash guards or wear loose, light fabrics with long sleeves or pants for greater protection.

5. Pamper summer skin

A great at-home routine is important to protecting that summer skin, but don’t forget about the benefits of seeing a dermatologist or aesthetician to improve your summer glow. LASSI specializes in cosmetic dermatology, medical dermatology, and aesthetic services, and offers an array of treatments to assist with any skincare need.
