Goldfish Swim School teaches water safety :: An introduction
DISCLAIMER: Hey reader! Please know Goldfish Swim School provided our author with the experience of lessons in exchange for her candid reviews. Did this benefit sway writer opinions? Heck no. We have minds of our own and are happy to share our feedback. But we’re definitely thankful to the partnership of Goldfish Swim School. So read on.
Water safety should be a big deal for parents. True, most readers who will see this post live in Indiana. And yes, there are many months out of the year where swimming is inconceivable to most Midwesterners. But the reality is that water is everywhere. Even the smallest bit of water can be dangerous for a child. Your toilet. A retention pond. A kiddie pool. The bathtub.
I am certainly not trying to scare you. There are enough stories out there to instill fear and guilt into parents. And if you're like me, you experience enough of that on your own. But the statistics are pretty clear. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, “Among preventable injuries, drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1-4 years old. Children less than a year old are more likely to drown at home in the bathroom or a bucket.”
Take a deep breath. The good news is there's something you can do about all of this.
Starting children in swim lessons at a young age - as early as four months old - not only teaches them to swim eventually {which of course is the end goal}, but it also does a whole lot of good before that. So that’s why all of my children, 5-years-old, almost 3-years-old, and eleven months, started swim lessons at Goldfish Swim School. Long before your littles are lapping you in the pool, they will hone their reflex to close their mouths when they feel water on their faces.

And as much as I don’t love to watch my kids dunked underwater {well, on some days it’s actually quite enjoyable}, I know that this exercise has a purpose tied to safety. They are learning the safe ways to get in and out of the water. They are being trained to look for the wall of the pool and to reach for it. These along with a multitude of other fundamental skills will serve them well now... and in their future swim team and junior Olympic days. Hey, a mother can dare to dream, right?
Goldfish Swim School has “Not only a passion for kids or a passion for swimming... it’s a special passion for changing-even saving-lives by teaching kids to swim.” This sounds like a perfect place for the most precious people in my life.
I’m excited to watch my kiddos become comfortable in and around the water, and I’m comforted by the fact that I am taking measures to make them more safe. The fact that they are having a blast is an added bonus!
