DIY Keepsake: How to make a baby clothes pillow

DIY

With a little planning, creating a DIY baby clothes pillow isn't difficult to do.

I have held onto special clothes my kids have worn since they were babies. Hello, my name is Cheryl and I am a sentimental hoarder. I always knew I wanted to turn them into a quilt one day as well as save a few of those tiny outfits so they can possibly give to their children.

Time has been flying and I decided I wanted to make something but not ready to take make a full quilt. Then a light bulb went off and I thought how cool would it be to make a pillowcase out of these baby clothes. This project can be a beautiful way to preserve memories that is also easy to do!

Here are the easy steps to making a DIY baby clothes pillow:

  1. Bring out the baby clothes and watch the memories rush right back to you. Let your child help pick them out. Lucy was so surprised that she used to fit some of her itty-bitty clothes.

  2. Figure out a layout plan. Standard size pillow is 20 inches by 26 inches. You can get a pillowcase out for reference.

  3. Cut fabric and allow a seam allowance of half an inch.   For the opening, you can do a 2-inch to 4-inch seam allowance. (this allows you to fold over twice so it is a clean edge.)

  4. Sew the items together, row by row.

  5. Attach the rows.

  6. Sew the opening edge seam.

  7. Attach front and back.

  8. Insert a pillow.

  9. Give the pillow to your kiddo and watch them light up.

You can make this pillow as simple as you like. If you want to make it more uniform, add some sashing, or border the clothes. Other fun ways to jazz it up: Add special mom and dad clothes to one of the sides, which would be great for a child comfort pillow if a parent travels or is in the military. Keep in mind that you can also sew the pillow by machine or by hand. Or consider a tie method for a no sew pillowcase, just make sure you have more fabric to allow for tie lengths. This is an easy way to get started. In the future, you can use all the pillowcases to turn into a quilt.
