Why Now Might Be the Right Time to Upgrade Your Outdoor Space
7 reasons to upgrade your outdoor living space now instead of waiting until spring—or “someday.”
There’s a funny thing we tend to do as homeowners: live with the parts of our house that don’t quite work for years, then finally fix them when we’re getting ready to move.
Suddenly, we’re refreshing the landscaping. Adding the patio. Creating the fire pit. Making the backyard look like somewhere we’d actually want to hang out...just in time for someone else to enjoy it.
But what if you made those improvements while your family still lived there?
Whether you have little kids who need somewhere to ride scooters and cover the ground in sidewalk chalk, teenagers who might actually emerge from their rooms for a fire pit, or a house that inevitably becomes the gathering place, an outdoor upgrade doesn’t have to be something you save for someday.
In fact, there’s a pretty good argument for doing it now.
7 Reasons To Upgrade Your Outdoor Living Space Now Instead of Waiting:
1. Your family's life is happening right now.
It's easy to think about home improvements in terms of what they'll do for your house. But we'd argue there's an equally important question: What will they do for your family?
A usable backyard changes as your family does.
When they're little, a patio can become home base for water tables, riding toys, popsicles and dinners outside when you can't handle one more crumb hitting the kitchen floor.
A few years later, it's where neighborhood kids gather, friends come over and you squeeze in dinner before practice.
Then suddenly they're teenagers—and that fire pit or outdoor seating area becomes somewhere they actually want to bring their friends.
The outdoor space doesn't have to be extravagant to make a difference. It just has to make spending time outside easier.
2. Forget the resort-worthy backyards taking over your Pinterest feed for a second.
Start with a much simpler question: What would make our family use this space more?
Maybe you need a defined patio instead of a stretch of grass nobody uses. Maybe it's a fire pit and comfortable seating. Maybe better landscaping would give you more privacy. Maybe you desperately need lighting so everyone doesn't head inside the second the sun goes down.
Treat your outdoor space the same way you'd treat a room inside your house: figure out what isn't working first, then solve for that.
This is one reason we like the approach from our partners at Heath Outdoor. Instead of assuming every backyard needs a massive transformation, their outdoor living packages create clearer starting points—with upfront pricing—so you can understand what an upgrade could realistically look like before disappearing down the backyard-renovation rabbit hole.
3. Build for the season of life you're actually in.
Before choosing pavers or pinning patio furniture, think about the next three to five years.
Do you have toddlers who need open space? Elementary-age kids who constantly have friends over? Teenagers you'd like to lure outside? Grandparents who visit often? Are you becoming the house that hosts holidays and neighborhood get-togethers?
Your answers should influence what you build.
A family with preschoolers may get significantly more everyday value from a large, flexible patio than an elaborate cooking setup. A family with older kids may prioritize a fire pit and gathering area. Someone who loves entertaining might care more about dining space, lighting and flow between indoors and out.
Design around the life you're already living—not the backyard you think you're supposed to have.

4. Enjoyment now can still mean investment later.
Of course, there’s another consideration: your house is also an investment.
Outdoor living space has become an increasingly important part of how buyers think about a home, and local real estate professionals continue to point to usable outdoor spaces as something Central Indiana buyers value.
But here's the part we think homeowners sometimes get backward:
You don't have to choose between improving your house for yourself and improving it for a future buyer.
Create the patio now and your family gets years of dinners outside.
Add the fire pit now and you get years of fall nights around it.
Improve the landscaping now and you get to pull into the driveway and enjoy it every day.
If those improvements ultimately make the property more appealing when it's time to sell? Even better.
Think of it as enjoyment now, investment later.
Our friends at Heath Outdoor say “Try the resale test! Walk into your backyard and pretend you're touring your house for the first time. Would the outdoor space make you more excited about buying the house—or does it feel like another project you'd immediately add to the list? That answer might tell you where to start.”
5. Spring isn't necessarily when you should start thinking about spring.
Every Midwesterner knows the feeling: we get the first warm, sunny weekend after winter and collectively decide we need to fix our yards immediately.
But if you already know you'd like to improve your outdoor space, there's no reason to wait for that first 70-degree Saturday to start planning.
Outdoor construction season in Central Indiana can extend well into fall, and right now, Heath Outdoor is making that decision a little easier with packaged outdoor upgrades that include upfront pricing—so you can see what you're getting, understand the investment and potentially get the project completed before the snow arrives.
And if your project makes more sense for 2027? Starting the conversation now gives you time to determine the scope, budget and design before spring fever hits.
So there are really two ways to think about it:
Want to use it sooner? Ask what can realistically be completed before winter.
Want it ready for next spring? Start planning now so you're not starting from zero when everyone else is calling.
Either way, fall can be a surprisingly smart time to get serious about the backyard you've been putting off.

6. You don't have to do everything at once.
This might be our favorite piece of advice because backyard inspiration can get expensive fast.
You do not need to transform every square foot of your property in one project.
Instead, create the bigger vision and figure out which piece will change how you use your yard the most right now.
Start with the patio and add landscaping later. Create the fire pit area this year and tackle lighting next. Build the hardscape now and layer in furniture, planters and all the pretty stuff over time.
A good landscape plan should help you understand how those pieces eventually work together—even if your budget says they aren't all happening on Tuesday.
7. Make sure you know what you're actually buying.
One of the hardest parts of planning a backyard renovation is figuring out what any of it is going to cost.
Pinterest is excellent at showing us what we want. It's considerably less helpful at telling us whether we're looking at a $5,000 project or a $50,000 one.
Before falling in love with a plan, establish a realistic investment range and ask what you can accomplish within it.
Heath Outdoor's landscaping cost calculator is a helpful place to start if you're still in the “Wait...what does something like this even cost?” stage. From there, you can decide whether you're ready for a larger transformation, a more defined outdoor living package or a project that can be completed in phases.
