Mental health resources every mom should know

Recently, we were reminded that caring for yourself doesn’t have to be costly or inconvenient. In that spirit, we wanted to drop these mental health resources that every mom should know. Because IYKYK and these are some of the strongest fighters to have in your corner.

Watch us discuss our top tips for mama’s mental health with Good Day Stateline/WTVO!

5 mental health resources every mom should know:

1. Headspace

This free app is focused on mindfulness not just for mamas, but it sure does benefit us. From meditation exercises to mindful activities, Headspace allows users to tap in when they have the time. I love the special goodnight segments that allow me to fully rest my brain before bed, instead of running thru mindless to-dos.

2. Talkspace

For mamas still uneasy about IRL therapy - or simply don’t have the time for an in-person appointment - Talkspace is the space to be in. From the easy online assessments to the simple therapist matching process, the Talkspace onboarding process is quick, eliminating any weeks-long worries of finding the ‘right’ therapist. Bonus: Couples and teen therapy opportunities are also available. And also worth noting: While there is a fee associated with Talkspace, they do accept a number of insurance plans.

3. Postpartum Support International

“You are not alone” reads the website and social channels for PSI, whose core focus is dedicated to supporting pregnant, postpartum, and post-loss families. And that’s a sentiment we hear echoed again and again by mamas in these same walks of life - I feel alone. PSI offers free, online weekly support groups, peer mentor programs, helplines, and more.

4. Crisis Text Line

I had no idea this existed until another CityMom mentioned it. Text the word HOME to the Crisis Text Line at 741741 and you’ll instantly be paired with a crisis counselor through free, 24/7 support. This trained counselor will listen and respond from their secure texting platform to help with resources, answers, and expertise.

5. Be Well Indiana

If you’re located in our home state of Indiana, BWI offers free, confidential support 24/7 with trained counselors, ready to tackle concerns related to stress, anxiety, loneliness, or mental health strains due to the pandemic. Interested mamas can phone 211, enter a zip code, then follow the prompts to the Be Well Crisis Helpline.

Bonus: Last but not least, I want to plug theCityMoms.

While we are not designed specifically as a mental health support team, we do offer the support many mamas seek as they navigate motherhood and parenting. Our Hive offers a free 24/7 virtual support community of women in your shoes of motherhood, IRL and virtual events to escape to, perks+discounts, and so much more. And we’d love to have you!
