Kid-friendly solar eclipse viewing spots

Indiana is in the sweet spot for April’s total solar eclipse, the biggest celestial event of 2024. As we get closer to the big day, eclipse events are showing up all around Indianapolis.

But which of these celebrations are family-approved? We’ve rounded up eight cosmic spots around Indy that are centered around fun for your little ones on the big day.

8 Kid-friendly solar eclipse viewing spots in Indianapolis’ path of totality!

1. Indiana State Fairgrounds

Looking to camp out with your crew? Come to the fairgrounds for the day or reserve an RV spot to camp out while the eclipse is on full display. Guests will receive a complementary pair of eclipse glasses and enjoy live music, a bar, and local food trucks. 

2. Broad Ripple Park

Reserving your free tickets gives you access to family fun including Pinhole Viewing Box making, Eclipse Art and free viewing glasses for the first 500 guests. 

3. Indiana State Museum

Are you looking for hands-on activities like space themed sensory bins, stomp rockets or creating your own sundial? Or maybe you want to take your little explorers to a new spot around the state to view the eclipse. Select from a full list of events and locations the Indiana State Museum is offering in Indiana’s North, Central, and Southwest regions. 

4. LUNACY! At White River State Park 

The State Park has pulled out all the stops, offering yoga classes, lounge spaces, food trucks, viewing glasses, a performance by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and more. And the best part, entrance is free!

5. The Holcomb Observatory at Butler University

Butler is offering free entry to a full experience of events and activities, such as telescope viewing, eclipse glasses, on hand scientific experts, planetarium shows, food trucks, and more. 

6. Sun King Brewery

All ages are invited to this free event in partnership with The Simons Foundation and 12 other breweries. Adults will be able to sip on their favorite brews while younger family members spread out around the lot and enjoy fun eclipse activities. 

7. Eclipse Extravaganza at the Children’s Museum

Your purchased general admission tickets for the day will give you access to the entire museum and so much more! The Children’s Museum has plans to decorate viewing glasses, share cosmic stories, host live views of NASA’s livestreams, offer STEM activities, and more.

8. Total Eclipse Fort Ben 2024 Festival 

Imagine seeing this year’s solar eclipse while soaring through the air on the swings, or zooming by on the slide! The Lawrence Community Park will be full of music, food trucks, and family activities all afternoon during the eclipse.
