Indiana State Fair Deals: Your Guide to the Best Day at the Fair

If you ask us, there isn't another day in Indiana where you can eat a lemon shake-up, watch a baby calf being born, pet goats, ride a ferris wheel, catch a concert, and somehow leave with a giant stuffed animal...all before dinner.

That's totally the magic of the Indiana State Fair, right?

But if it's your first trip—or your first trip with kids—it can also feel like a lot. Between the food, rides, exhibits, concerts, and seemingly endless options, it's easy to spend more money (and energy) than you planned.

The good news? It doesn't have to be that way.

We've rounded up the best Indiana State Fair deals, our favorite family-friendly stops, how to save on Fair admission, and exactly how we'd spend a full day to get the biggest bang for your buck.

First Things First: Pick the Right Day

If your schedule is flexible, this is the biggest money-saving tip we can give you.

Go on a $2 Tuesday

The Indiana State Fair's famous $2 Tuesdays are back, and they're easily one of the best family entertainment deals of the summer.

On August 11 and August 18, you'll find:

  • $2 admission

  • $2 Midway rides

  • At least one $2 food item at every food stand

For a family of four, that's a massive savings before you've even walked through the gates.

If Tuesdays don't work, look for upcoming discount days (like AAA Day on 8/20 when AAA cardholders receive free admission!) to help save money, and the Foodie Family Four Pack is worth considering if you know you'll be sampling plenty of fair food together. Our favorite discount day? Grab a copy of the IndyStar on Monday, 8/17 and get in free Wednesday, 8/19 (thank you Indianapolis Star!).

Arrive Early (Trust Us)

The Fair opens before most families are ready for lunch, and getting there in the morning changes the entire experience.

You'll:

  • Beat the biggest crowds.

  • Find easier parking.

  • Knock out the animal barns before the afternoon heat.

  • Enjoy shorter lines for rides later in the day.

Plus? Kids are almost always happiest before the sugar and excitement really kick in.

WANT MORE SPECIAL DAYS WITH THE FAM?

Here are our Top 10 Mother-Daughter Date Ideas.

Stop #1: Head Straight to the Animal Barns

Before you spend a dollar on rides, head to the barns.

It's one of those classic State Fair experiences that's easy to overlook but ends up becoming everyone's favorite memory.

Watch livestock competitions.
Meet baby animals.
See giant draft horses.
Watch farmers preparing animals for competition.

For younger kids especially, this often becomes the highlight of the day—and it's included with admission.

Don't Skip the Glass Barn

If you've never been inside the Glass Barn, add it to your list.

It's interactive, air conditioned (you're welcome), and gives kids an up-close look at Indiana agriculture through hands-on exhibits and demonstrations.

It's one of those places where kids are having so much fun they don't even realize they're learning.

Take Advantage of the Free Attractions

One of the biggest surprises about the Indiana State Fair?

Some of the best experiences don't cost anything extra.

A few family favorites include:

  • Little Hands on the Farm

  • 4-H exhibits

  • Animal demonstrations

  • Complimentary tractor shuttle rides around the grounds

  • The DNR Fishing Pond

  • Daily entertainment throughout the fairgrounds

  • The Hoosier Lottery Free Stage concerts (included with admission)

  • Returning in 2026: The Big Top Circus

Best part: You could honestly spend half a day enjoying free attractions before ever purchasing a ride ticket.

DID SOMEONE SAY FREE THINGS AND FAIR FAVORITES?

Then It's Time for the Midway

Let's be honest… The rides are probably why your kids wanted to come in the first place.

If you're visiting on a Tuesday, every Midway ride is just $2. Otherwise, consider purchasing Midway wristbands if your crew plans to spend several hours riding. Wristbands are significantly cheaper when purchased before the Fair opens and are available on select days.

Our advice? Don't start here.

Let kids burn off some excitement exploring first, then save the Midway for late afternoon when everyone's ready for a break from walking.

Build Lunch Around the Fair Food

Here's our strategy:

Skip one huge meal. Instead, split several things.

One of the best parts of the Indiana State Fair is trying foods you literally can't find anywhere else.

This year's lineup includes everything from:

  • Lemon Shake-Up Floats

  • Mexican Street Corn Pizza

  • Buffalo Chicken Dip Pizza

  • Soul Train Egg Rolls

  • Butter Dipped Ice Cream

  • Bananas Foster Cold Brew Floats

  • General Tso Fries

  • Hot Cheeto Fried Oreos

The portions are generous enough that sharing lets everyone taste more while spending less. Or, don't forget the $2 Tuesdays when many vendors share $2 food specials - there are so many budget-friendly options to get your Fair food fix!

Ride the Tractor Shuttle

This might sound like a tiny tip, but it isn't.

The tractor shuttle is free, saves little legs from walking miles across the fairgrounds, and somehow ends up being an attraction all by itself.

Kids absolutely love riding behind the giant tractors, and parents love getting off their feet for a few minutes.

Everyone wins.

Don't Feel Like You Have to Do Everything

Here's the biggest mistake we see families make:

Trying to cram every attraction into one visit. Instead, pick your priorities. Maybe today is:

  • Animals

  • Fair food

  • Midway rides

  • One concert

That's a full day already! Leave the rest for next year OR make a return visit.

The Fair has a way of becoming a family tradition, and you'll enjoy it much more if you're not racing from one end of the grounds to the other.

Our Ideal Family Fair Day

If we were planning one perfect day, it'd look something like this:

9:00am: Arrive early and head straight to the animal barns.

10:00am: Visit the Glass Barn and Little Hands on the Farm.

11:30am: Start sampling Fair food before the lunch crowds hit.

1:00pm: Ride the tractor shuttles across the grounds.

2:00pm: Explore exhibits, pioneer village, and this year's VHS Revival exhibit.

3:30pm: Hit the Midway for rides.

5:30pm: Grab one more Fair treat (because you absolutely have room for ice cream or other sweet indulgences like a dole whip).

Evening: Stay for live music or other free entertainment at the Hoosier Lottery Free Stage before heading home.

Final take: The Indiana State Fair has always been one of our favorite family traditions—not because it's the cheapest day of the summer, but because it's one of the few places where fairgoers of all ages in the family finds something they love.

And when you plan around the best Indiana State Fair deals, take advantage of the free attractions, and pace your day instead of trying to do it all, it becomes one of the best entertainment values in Indiana. We'll see you at the Dairy Bar!
