Family-friendly things to do this Summer in Hendricks County

Get ready for a summer full of fam-tastic fun in Hendricks County!

From gorgeous parks and lively farmers markets to super-fun festivals and hands-on museums, there's seriously something for everyone here.

And we’ve compiled a list of all the best things to do during Summer in Hendricks County:

1. Enjoy the sunshine & fresh air

There’s nothing better than enjoying a day outside in one of Henricks County’s many parks and natural areas! Grab your hiking boots or bike and head to McCloud Nature Park to explore the over 6 miles of trails and enjoy the peacefulness of Indiana's wilderness. We’d also recommend W.S. Gibbs Memorial Park and Avon Gardens! Take a break from your adventures and enjoy a picnic or a game of frisbee surrounded by all the beautiful scenery.

2. Time for a cool down

When the summer heat becomes too much, let your little ones splash and play at the Gill Family Aquatic Center in Danville’s Ellis Park or one of the splash pads in Guilford Township's Hummel Park or Washington Township Park in Avon.

Note: One of our favorite splash pads in Brownsburg’s Williams Park in Brownsburg is closed for the 2024 season. I know, I know, we’re sad about it too!

Be sure to check out Splash Island of Plainfield. There are several new additions to the park this year including a new waterslide tower with three new waterslides. There’s also a new splash pad area and several private cabanas available beside the lazy river.

And don't forget to stop in at the Murphy Aquatic Park in Avon if you're looking for even more epic slides, a wave pool, or a relaxing ride along a lazy river!  It's the perfect way to beat the heat and have a refreshing day with family and friends.

3. Find your fun at a festival

Check out the Hendricks County Rib-Fest, located at the Danville 4-H fairgrounds, where you can indulge in mouthwatering BBQ and enjoy live music. You and the whole family will love the fireworks after dark and the illumination of all the festive hot air balloons. Bonus: Admission is free!

Be sure you don't miss the Hendricks County Fair, a beloved tradition featuring rides, delicious food, games, concerts, and agricultural exhibits. And don’t skip the opportunity to see the Human Cannonball–your littles will be amazed!

4. Day trips for the win

If you're searching for a unique adventure or a day trip activity for you and the kiddos, try the Tie Dye Lab in Avon, go for a trail ride at Natural Valley Ranch, or plan a visit to Beasley's Orchard for berry picking or family pictures in the sunflowers!

5. Take a look back

If you have a love for history and culture, Hendricks County has plenty to offer. You’ll want to stop in at the Hendricks County Historical Museum where you can check out the county jail which was once home to the infamous John Dillinger.

For lunch, check out Hendricks County's Oasis Diner, a historical 50s-era experience!

6. Indulge in local flavors

Imagine strolling through the bustling farmers' markets, where you can soak in the vibrant sights and indulge in the flavors of local favorites. Fresh produce, artisanal goodies, and irresistible treats await!

And you cannot pass up the chance to dine at the hottest restaurants in town: Try Stone Creek Dining Company in Plainfield for mouthwatering farm-to-table delights. If you're a barbecue lover, head to Dawson's Too in Brownsburg for some seriously tasty eats. And don't forget The Coachman in Plainfield, serving up classic American dishes with a twist.
