Teachers are actual superheroes, right? This year’s teacher appreciation week (May 6th-10th) is our chance to lift them up and show gratitude for the daily effort they put in.

Watch us discuss great teacher gifts with our friends at Indy Now/FOX59!

Laura Neville of Gifted Co. Curated Gifts

theCityMoms tapped Laura Neville of Gifted Co. Curated Gifts in Beverly Hills, MI (a superhero in her own right) to put her bespoke gifting skills to the test. She challenged us to consider teachers outside of that role. Even with their capes, they are just like us, with lives outside of school. Consider asking: What is their personal style or vibe? What do they like to do in their spare time? What is fun and practical?

Here are a few of Laura’s unique ideas to help you gift outside of the box:

cozy gift basket

”Plant Lady”

Laura loves to find “vessels” that are functional in some way - other than holding the gift.  Her favorite for those that like to get their hands dirty is a galvanized watering can that you can fill with items to build out the theme.

Some fave fillers:

Pro Tip: Make the gifting “vessel” part of the gift instead of something to be tossed or recycled.  It can live another life after the treasures have been taken out!

self-care gift

”The Host With the Most”

Laura loves a good tray for this gift idea.  Whether used for moving snacks and silverware to the next room or patio, it will arrive in style. If you know their tastes, try and match the tray to it:

Get the tray ready to mingle:

  • Fun cocktail napkins to match their vibe and color palette of your gift.

  • Keep it local with honey or jam from a farmer’s market and get the kiddos involved by having them pick the flavors. Don’t forget the spreaders!

  • A small cutting board or olivewood board is always handy for displaying apps or sweets.

  • Uniquely flavored crackers are easy, and everyone likes a little variety.

  • Fresh herbs like rosemary, basil, or dill can go a long way in rounding out the feel of the gift (and can be used to cook with!).

“Vacation Vibes”

The end of school will be here before we know it and this gift will set your beloved teacher up for some much-needed R&R. For this gift, a tote or beach bag is going to be your best friend. Not a teacher bag but something chic they can use on a flight or by the pool. Again, match this to their aesthetic, are they into bold colors or neutrals?

Pro Tip: Pop into Marshalls or Target for the best and most season-relevant selection.

Fill it with items destined to get them in the summer mood:

As the final gold star to any gift you give, Laura suggests a heartfelt note from you and your kiddo. Authentic effort never goes unappreciated and is often the best gift of all.
