Starting a fitness routine after baby? Here’s what to know.

You’ve cleared the 6-week appointment after your LO’s arrival and can’t wait to get back into a regular fitness routine. But whaaaaa is this new postpartum body able to do? And what tips should you keep in mind when getting back to regular workouts?

Melissa Keating - an instructor with Physique 57 of Indianapolis (but located in Carmel, just to avoid confusion!) - is not only a qualified expert on this discussion, but also a mom of four. And we were lucky enough to catch her on Instagram Live a few weeks ago to chat her best tips!

What do you need to know when starting a fitness routine after having a baby?

1. Get your doctor or midwife’s approval first. Just because you’ve reached 6 weeks after baby doesn’t automatically mean you’re ready for a workout. Make sure you’ve checked in with your doctor or midwife to get the green light before you start a heavy sweat sesh.

2. Listen to your body. Are you feeling ready to workout? Did you have a c-section that could affect core workouts? Having pelvic floor worries? It’s ok to give yourself grace in these new months as mom. Melissa says, “If you realize if even just walking around the block you’re not feeling so good, you’ve got to listen.”

3. Workout where it’s convenient for you. If you prefer to workout in-studio or gym, make it somewhere close to you. “It has to be a place where you won’t make an excuse not to go,” says Melissa. She recommends an out-of-house option no more than 30 minutes away. If your prefer in-home, many local studios and gyms are offering virtual class options now (thank you pandemic!), so you can enjoy a class from the comfort of your living room.

4.. Be an advocate for yourself. Talk to the instructors - let them know of any concerns or questions. A good instructor will listen and help offer modifications as needed such as diastasis recti, the separation of abdominal muscles, post-pregnancy. You are not alone in experiencing changes after baby, and have options.

“The hardest point is showing up for you, but it’s the most important part,” Melissa reminds us too. “Just give your body grace, say today this is what I’m capable of, take that success, and build on that.”
