Baby It's Cold Outside: 6 Winter Pregnancy Photoshoot Ideas for Expecting Moms

Stop me if this sounds familiar: You've got the maternity photo shoot booked, the baby bump ready to be in front of the camera, and (maybe?) a white dress picked out... but you're drawing a blank on winter maternity photoshoot ideas. Because how do you make winter coats look, well, photo session appropriate?

Both of my babies were born during summertime and I'm no help. So to answer this question, we turned to what's trending in winter maternity shoot core - thank you Instagram! - and discovered six of the perfect pregnancy photo shoot ideas to replicate at your sesh.

6 Winter Pregnancy Photoshoot Ideas…

1. Feel winter season festive

Still have your Christmas tree up? (Hey, we hear lots of CityMoms who keep it up thru February as a Valentine's decoration so no shame!) Invite your maternity photographer to your house, and use your tree as a beautiful backdrop. We love how Sydney took her holiday ornaments down but adorned it with delicate white bows (or bare trees would work too!), a simple pose with her growing belly, and really nothing else.

2. Take the fun outside

I "woke up in a snow globe" says Samantha, so she took advantage of the winter wonderland feel by capturing outdoor pregnancy photos in the winter weather. I love her album of casual belly shots and cute catch-snowflake-on-your-tongue poses!

3. Keep it simple in the snow

This great photo is kinda the classic nod and reminder that you don't need to overthink your winter maternity shoot. Jocelyn and her husband use the ultrasound photo, a onesie, and the backdrop of our winter landscape for their announcement photos. It's easy, simple, and helps act as a timestamp of what's to come. If you wanted to amp up the props, adding in some baby shoes would be so cute here too!

4. Bare the bump

Speaking of a winter wonderland, we came across photographer Andrea's feed with maternity clients and loved how simple her vision was for this outdoor session. Mom-to-be has on a simple white dress, the best light optics bouncing above her, and beautiful bare trees behind her. It's incredible how something so simple makes such stunning outdoor pictures! Also: Wouldn't floral crowns be such a gorge addition to photos like these?

5. Add on to your family photos

No need to book a separate maternity photo shoot! If you already have a family session scheduled this winter, why not combo them all into one, and let your family members do the heavy lifting here. This photo from Pink Blush Maternity is a little more baby-announcement than baby-bump but... I also know so many families who choose to soft or hard launch their pregnancies anymore and this would be such a great way to do to that! I love that big sis is the one spilling the beans here (just get her some hand warmers if she's outside for long).

6. Pull out your winter whites

Yes you can do a formal maternity dress if you want, but I also love the idea of just layering on your favorite winter white 'fits like Ariana does for these photos. I love that the wardrobe options for pics like these can really be anything you pull from your own wardrobe including your favorite winter sweaters.
