Making time for each other isn’t always easy. Life can be, well, chaotic. My husband and I have been married for nearly 14 years, and with three children, date night isn’t always at the top of our list. However, a recent visit to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra on Monument Circle reminded us both why it should be.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit that as a couple, we haven’t been out together on a real date in years. Yes, years. Our youngest just recently turned two, so between surviving the trenches of having a baby who is now a toddler, my 6-year-old’s baseball camps, our 11-year-old’s volleyball and tumbling practices, my husband sometimes working late, and the cost of a babysitter for three kids, time for just us somehow got put aside for entirely too long.

So, earlier this month, we both decided it was time - time for a day to focus on each other and experience something new. I had always heard about the beauty and magnetism of the performances at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra but never made the time to go. Until now. I went on the ISO’s website and found a start time for a Friday performance at 11 a.m. It was perfect - a day date instead of a date night (no babysitter money needed) but, more importantly, a musical escape. So, on that beautiful March day, we set out downtown to enjoy a Coffee Pops Series performance for the Pink Martini 30th Anniversary Tour, featuring a blend of jazz and ‘40s and ‘50s pop that took us on what you might call a worldly adventure. And yes, it was everything we had hoped for… and more.

More Than Just Mom (and Dad)

As moms, we’re used to hearing “Hey, Mom” about every 30 seconds and getting caught up in the mundane tasks of everyday life - but not this day. Our day date allowed me to ditch the sweatpants and top bun, put on a pretty dress, and actually do my hair. (Big stuff, I know!) And let me tell you, as parents, it was everything my husband and I needed.

Neither of us had been to the Hilbert Circle Theatre, home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and one of the city’s most prestigious and historic venues. The moment we stepped inside, both of us said, “Wow, this is beautiful.”

And it was. I couldn’t get over the colors and details of the interior architecture, all inspired by the arts of ancient Greece and Rome. It felt as if we had stepped back in time, into another city and a different era. It was absolute perfection.

As the graceful, musical masterpieces started to fill the air, I caught a glimpse of my husband, all dressed up in his handsome attire, and I was taken back to what made us fall in love all those years ago. It was a sweet, subtle reminder of what being just us really felt like, and I smiled while thinking of this beautiful life my husband and I have created, reflecting on how it all began and where it is now. What a magical, pristine hour it was—one I didn’t want to end. For in that moment, our titles of mom and dad were traded in for Derek and Amber, and it had been too long since those two names were so elegantly in sync.

Simplicity at Its Finest

What made our day date at ISO even more special was walking hand-in-hand down the street following the performance and stopping to grab lunch, all while enjoying uninterrupted conversation for the first time in a long time. It was a day we didn’t know we needed, and I’m so glad we said yes to enjoying some time for just us.

My hope is that you will say yes too! Whether you’re ready for a date night with a Classical Series performance or a simple day date with a Pops Series performance like my husband and I enjoyed, this experience is for you. So, go on! Swap your never-ending to-do list for a moment of calm and clarity, and fill your soul with music that feels like it was hand-selected just for you. Get dressed up, rekindle that romance, and let the beauty of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra fill your soul. Your tickets are waiting.
