First-timer's guide: The Eiteljorg Museum with kids

We get it: Maybe the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art sounds super "adult" to you, but it's a kid-friendly delight located right in the heart of Indy. The Eiteljorg is an art and history museum that focuses on the cultures of the American West and the Indigenous Peoples of North America. The more relaxed and less crowded spaces mean you have more access to view the art and enjoy the all-ages interactive exhibits.

So let’s get to it, here is your first-timer’s guide to the Eiteljorg Museum:

First things first, where do you park?

The Eiteljorg Museum shares a spacious, underground garage with the nearby White River State Park. Access the garage from Washington Street and once inside, park near the Eiteljorg entrance signs. Get the full info (and a map!) here.

Pro tip: Bring your parking garage ticket with you and the museum will validate it.

Entering the museum can be a little confusing for a first-timer. Honestly, we’ve been a few times and still get turned around. From the garage, you’ll use the stairs or elevator to get to the ground level and then walk along the pathway to the large entry doors. Inside, an attendant will greet you, help with tickets, and answer any questions!

What can you bring (or not) to the Eiteljorg Museum?

Strollers and anything you may need for accessibility or mobility are welcome - or the museum offers them (yes, even strollers!) for free on a first-come-first-serve basis at the main admissions desk. They also offer access to a coat room and lockers (again, free) to store anything you don’t want to carry.

Unfortunately, food and beverages are not allowed (hey, we understand the need to protect the art!). Still, there are drinking fountains throughout each level as well as a fabulous cafe onsite.

Learn more about what’s allowed - and what’s not - on the museum’s policy page.

Sketch pads and pencils are allowed, as well as flash free photography, so encourage your little ones to get inspired and create something of their own!

Is the museum really friendly for all ages?

Yes! The Eiteljorg Museum is an art museum showcasing incredible and unique pieces, however, that does not mean “no kids allowed.” While there are areas where looking but no touching is the rule, there are plenty of opportunities for little ones to get hands-on and engage with the exhibits.

DYK: The Eiteljorg Museum is so committed to opening its doors to children and families that it created the “Eiteljorg Kids” membership program. Learn more about becoming an Eiteljorg Kid.

In nice weather take advantage of the patio overlooking the canal and the White River State Park (and dine al fresco at the cafe). While outside, be sure to explore the beautiful sculptures on the grounds. The lush lawns are a great space for everyone to run or relax.

Ok, but what about babies and toddlers?

First, hats off to all the baby/toddler moms in the trenches, we see you, and you’re doing great. Next, yes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at the Eiteljorg. On the lowest level, you will find the absolute crown jewel of this museum for moms of little ones (or big kids, seriously, something for everyone): the Nina Mason Pulliam Education Center including the R.B. Annis Western Family Experience.

This area offers countless hands-on, child-centered activities, including a full-size stagecoach and horse (yes, they can ride it). We’ve mentioned that the entire museum has a variety of kid-friendly activities interspersed throughout, the education is solely focused on a child’s need for cooperative and immersive play. This exhibit is perfect for younger children to freely explore, and older children can immerse themselves in learning about frontier and indigenous life.

Don’t miss this:

Cagle Family Gateway to Learning (also on the lower level) offers a space for you and your family to relax, read, create art, or scour the resource library. There is also a well-appointed quiet room for overstimulated little ones (or mamas) as well as a comfortable lactation room to pump, nurse, or change those who need it.

Peek even more opportunities to enjoy the Eiteljorg:

  • Mark your calendar for the annual summer Indian Market and Festival. The market hosts musicians, cultural presentations, dancers, participatory art, games, and local and traditional food vendors. Happening June 22 - 23rd, 2024. Separate ticket purchases are required.
