Peewinkle’s Puppet Studio has opened their season of Rumpelstiltskin, running through April 19, 2019. A quick disclaimer that our writer did receive tickets to the performance in exchange for her review. And while we’re required to disclaim that, we’d also like to disclaim that… her family absolutely loved it. Read on, reader…

Peewinkle’s Puppet Studio is one of our family’s favorite spots in Indianapolis. This charming old-world style, 65-seat puppet theatre is family owned and located inside the Indiana State Museum. We have been coming to their puppet shows for the last four years or so and love catching new and old features alike!

Set on the 2nd floor of the ISM, you are welcomed into the theater by the team of puppeteers, lighting techs, and free popcorn.

Before the show starts, take a look around the mini lobby at the historical features and all different types of marionettes that line the walls – some have been handmade by the Peewinkle’s team themselves. They’re such a treat to see and will inspire your little to want one. It’s definitely a good pause to say ‘if you can sit still through this show, maybe we can consider getting one’ if that’s your mode of ushering them in to their seats. {Don’t worry: We tried it out and it worked!}

Rumplestiltskin – onstage now-April 19, 2019 – is about a poor miller. As the story goes, he had a beautiful daughter who he said could turn straw into gold. And in a twist of fate, a king arrives and demands she turn the straw into gold for him, or he will kill her. Then she meets Rumpelstiltskin and that’s when the story really begins.

Presented on a traditional marionette stage complete with velvet curtain, Peewinkle’s brings this story to life with their beautifully crafted and restored marionettes as well as the lovely painted sets.

Watching this classic fairy tale on the stage is mesmerizing. Puppeteering seems like an old art form, but it’s actually still very popular! Performers Debbi and Peggy do a great job making puppeteering fun for their audience with music and jokes that snuck giggles out of everyone. And when they bring the puppets out for the kids to see up close after the show, their eyes double in size like they’ve never seen anything like it. You can tell these ladies really love what they do.

YOU KNOW, SPEAKING OF MUSEUMS: Museum preschools are totally a thing popping up around the country.

When the show is over, Peewinkle’s often hosts special craft sessions – after this performance our CityKids created their own puppet. They were able to take them up on stage for a photo opp then bring them home with us. Unlike other Peewinkle’s performances, this post-show workshop IS included with the ticket price. {In other words, other Peewinkle’s shows offer post show workshops too, but for an additional cost.}

BONUS: If your kiddos loved making your puppet after the show, make sure to check out the summer camps Peewinkle’s offers. As they say, it’s “A great start in arts… for the youngest hearts.”
