Cereal Cinema :: CityMoms Report

//Cereal Cinema :: CityMoms Report

There’s no better way to beat the post-holiday, dreary weather blues than a fun family outing. Thanks to theCityMoms, my family had just that when we ventured to Newfields for the first Indy Film Fest Cereal Cinema of the new year. And even if you’re finding this outside the holidays, that’s okay! Cereal Cinema runs all throughout the year.

Here’s why Cereal Cinema is the perfect outing for your family:

Hosted in collaboration with Indy Film Fest, Cereal Cinema presents family-friendly flicks on multiple Saturday mornings throughout the year. As the name suggests, the ticket comes with an all-you-can-eat cereal buffet, fresh fruit, and coffee {just for all you sleepy parents out there}.

Films are screened in the comfortable indoor theater at Newfields, the Toby. Past films have also been held at the downtown Athenaeum adjacent to the Rathskeller. It’s been a few years though so probably safe to say Newfields is the go-to spot.

While theater seating is abundant, if you arrive early enough, you might score a plush, enormous bean bag chair down front {we did not, much to my five year-old’s dismay}. The lights are on during each film but kept dim – it is far from your traditional hushed viewing experience! Families have the freedom to move around the theater as needed and as all parents know, sometimes little ones need to stretch their legs. Pro: Every family in attendance knows to expect some noise during the movie so if your little is feeling especially vocal, no sweat.

Films vary but are generally a nostalgic throwback family movie perfect for parents and kids. Past screenings have included Hocus Pocus, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, A Muppet Christmas Carol and The Adventures of Winnie The Pooh.

On the Saturday of our visit, the featured film was Ponyo. It is acclaimed anime master Hayao Miyazaki’s tale of friendship between a five year-old boy and a goldfish turned girl. True to form, the film was quirky and beautiful with a thoughtful message woven throughout.

Here are the upcoming dates in 2019 – thanks to the Newfields team for confirming!

  • May 4 {during Indy Film Fest}: Herbie the Love Bug
  • July 6: Sandlot
  • September 14: Wall-E
  • November 2: Coco
  • December 21: A Muppet Christmas Carol

MORE INFO: Tickets run $6 for ages 6 and up and we recommend purchasing in advance – some previous screenings have sold out. CityKids ages five and under are free. Indy Film Fest isn’t usually too forthcoming with dates for upcoming Cereal Cinema events so stay tuned in to their website and Newfields social media channels for announcements.
