Peewinkle’s Puppet Studio: Goldilocks and the Three Bears

CityMom Stacey reveals today why Peewinkle’s Puppet Studio makes a great stop this Fall. {Hint: It has to do with Goldilocks and the Three Bears!}

I’m going to confess something – I had no idea until recently that there was a marionette puppet studio inside the State Museum.

But now that we’ve been to our first show at Peewinkle’s Puppet Studio, we’ll be back often, and here’s why…

First, parking is easy. You can park in the underground garage, which means this is also a great activity for bad weather. Once you’re inside,¬†tickets are reasonable – this show is $8 per person 2 and up, which includes some discussion before/after and popcorn. Other shows are $5-12, depending on what day you go. If you’re not visiting the museum that day, you don’t need a museum ticket – just take the elevator to the second floor for the studio.
Second, while waiting for the show to start, the studio is full of all things puppet to look at. There’s a machine by the stage with vintage marionettes that dance if you put a quarter in – this alone kept my three toddlers (ages 2.5, 1.5, and 1.5) busy for several minutes!

Peeking at some of the vintage marionettes in the lobby.

Upcoming performances include a Halloween show in October, a winter holidays run in November, and a Christmas show in December. They also do birthday parties, for those of you looking for something unique to do!
Third, the performances are adorably quaint and fun.

If you have Goldilocks fans in your family, though, you need to go NOW. Like, this week! Peewinkle’s Puppet Studio is doing a short run {ends September 22} of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This well loved story is performed with vintage puppets, made in the 1950s by the mother of the current puppeteers. It’s the perfect length for a younger crowd {I’d say ages 1-7} at around 20-25 minutes.
Finally, this show includes a post show workshop. We made our own baby bears with a blueberry bush puppet.

With three toddlers, we don’t always make it through every activity we attempt, but they were fascinated by the whole show and didn’t make a peep. It is a great introduction to live theater, so if you’re looking for an opportunity to introduce your kids, head to Peewinkle’s!
