As the Indianapolis area continues to familiarize with all-things-IKEA, we’re all on a learning curve. What are shortcuts? Do I need to sign up for the IKEA Family program? {Answer: Yes.} Are the Swedish meatballs really that good?

We covered a number of tips back in October during the opening, especially how to shop IKEA with kids in tow. Now we’re popping back in with a new hot tip:

IKEA hosts a Kids Academy with free monthly craft fun for children. And with thanks to our local IKEA Fishers store, theCityMoms got an exclusive, member-only taste for this fun class.

What is the IKEA Kids Academy?

It’s a free, drop-in craft pop-up located inside select IKEA stores. Activities are designed for children ages 12 and under and reservations are not required.

How often are they held?

Depending on location, a quick Internet search shows multiple IKEA stores host these on a monthly basis. Schedules are typically showing us Saturdays but a few occasional weekdays are listed as well.

Where are they inside the store?

Check your local IKEA event pages for details but our location hosts these next to the Smaland in-house childcare. For our event pictured in this post, we were in a corner of the Restaurant.

For theCityMoms-exclusive event with our local IKEA Fishers, our members enjoyed an evening date at the store to preview one of the classes IKEA would host during Spring Break week. CityKids delighted in decorating their own personal watering can with stickers, markers and other embellishments. Our CityMoms loved how prepared the Kids Academy setup was: Each child received a waterproof art smock to wear while decorating and the tables were bedecked with wipes because kids + markers/glue = lots of cleanup. Well done IKEA crew!

CityKids also received a cute IKEA tote with fun extras like branded cups, towels, tattoos and more.

BONUS: Our IKEA Fishers location is hosting a special Kids Academy during Spring Break week! So if you’ve landed on theCityMoms blog from somewhere else in the US, check your local store events to see if they’re hosting something similar.

During Spring Break week IKEA will feature one craft every day at 11am and 5pm {while supplies last}:

  • Monday, 3/26: Bracelet making workshop
  • Tuesday, 3/27: Spin art
  • Wednesday, 3/28: Painted frames
  • Thursday, 3/29: Decorate a watering can {just like we did above!}
  • Friday, GURLI decorating

Our event took place on a Tuesday evening which was perfect timing – Kids Eat Free at IKEA on Tuesday! What’s even sweeter is IKEA’s powerful deal offers two {2} free kids meals for every one {1} paid adult meal. That made these CityFamilies very happy:
